Sand is a naturally spawning block that is found in Desert Biomes and beaches. Sand obeys gravity, meaning that it will fall if there is no block beneath it. However, it will not fall at world generation; it will only fall after a block is broken or placed near it, or if it is shot with an Arrow.

Variants

There are two varieties of sand in Minecraft PE-

Both of these can be crafted into respective types of Sandstone.

Vegetation

Sand can be used for farming Cacti, as they can only be placed on Sand. Dead Bushes can also only spawn on Sand.

Trivia

  • The texture for Sand is also the texture used for the hotbar.
  • Sand is one of the few blocks that obey physics.
    • The only other blocks that obey physics are Top Snow, Gravel and Anvils. Primed TNT also obeys gravity (though it's an entity).
  • Sand is a component of Redstone alternatives, mainly being the Piston alternative for Piston alternative doors.
    • Redstone alternatives are obsolete as all Redstone components are added.
  • Cacti, Sugar Cane, and Dead Bushes are the only plants that can grow on Sand. Cacti grows anywhere, while Sugar Cane needs water nearby to grow. Dead Bushes don't grow but spawn only on Sand blocks.
    • Sugar Cane will grow slightly faster on Sand than it will on Dirt.
  • As Sand is falling, it is an entity, so it can be Fished towards the player. This is also true for Gravel.
  • Sand can be made to float by placing it on Tall Grass and then breaking the grass.
  • Floating Sand releases particles below itself.
    • The same is true for Gravel.
  • Sand used to not have any gravity until Update 0.6.0
