Usage

Redstone Comparators are primarily used in Redstone circuits to maintain, compare, or subtract signal strength, or to measure certain Block states, including the fullness of Containers such as ChestsBrewing Stands, and Furnaces. It can also indicate how much Cake is left.

While the normal position is next to the container it measures the fullness of, the Redstone Comparator is able to detect this through a Block. This allows for a Chest on one side of the wall, and the Redstone Comparator on the other side of the wall.

A full container gives a signal strength of 15, and will decrease down towards 0 if the container is empty. An Item Frame will also give a signal referring to rotation of Items in Item Frames. No Items give signal strength 0, and then from no rotation till full rotation the signal varies from 1 through 8.

Redstone Comparators have two modes; Subtraction Mode and Comparison Mode. When the single light is lit, it is in Comparison Mode. When the Player hits the Redstone Comparator, it switches modes.

Trivia

  • Redstone Comparators cannot be locked, unlike Redstone Repeaters.
  • The Player can make a Redstone clock by connecting a Redstone Comparator to some Redstone dust.
  • The Player can make a Redstone delaying system using 2 or more Redstone Comparators and some Redstone.
  • Redstone Comparators can create temporary Airlocks if placed underwater.
  • They are often confused with Redstone Repeaters.
  • Redstone Comparators can also take an output through Blocks.
