Farmland is a Block on which Seeds can be planted and grown. It was added in Update 0.4.0.

Obtaining

Farmland is produced by tilling a Grass Block, Grass Path, or Dirt block with a Hoe.

Usage

Farmland is required to grow the six crops currently in MinecraftWheat, Melon, Pumpkin, Potato, Carrot, and Beetroot. Melon and Pumpkin blocks don't need to be on farmland, however, their seeds do.
