Breeding is a game mechanic added in Update 0.8.0, in which two Mobs of the same species meet specific conditions that enable a Baby Mob to spawn.
There are two ways to breed a Mob:
- A majority of the mobs can be bred by using specific kinds of Food. One way to determine if the food can breed a mob is to hold it and observe if the mob gets 'attracted' to the Player, and follows them.
- Villagers can be reproduced by building a structure or a 'house' nearby.
- Cows, Mooshrooms, Horses, and Sheep accept Wheat.
- Pigs accept Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroots.
- A tamed Wolf accepts meat (including Rotten Flesh ) or Bones.
- An Ocelot only accepts Fish.
- A Rabbit accepts Carrots, Golden Carrots, and Dandelions.
- Horses accept Golden Carrots.
- Baby mobs can't breed until they grow up.
- Hostile Mobs cannot be bred.
- Wolves, horses, and ocelots have to be tamed in order to breed.
- After breeding, the Player will have to wait about five minutes before trying to breed the same mobs again. This is mainly to prevent the Player from causing lagging in the world by spawning too many mobs at the same time.
- Mobs cannot breed if there's a wall between them, as they must be near each other for the baby mob to spawn.
- Villagers sometimes look at other villagers through walls and windows and enter love mode, but cannot breed since there is a wall separating them.
